Sights & excursions in St. Martin, Salzburg Sights in St. Martin

St. Martin is a tranquil place and has so many things to see. We are especially proud, naturally enough, of the Maria Kirchental Pilgrimage Church, after Maria Plain, Salzburg’s most popular pilgrimage destination.

Built between 1694 and 1701 to plans drawn up by Austria’s most famous baroque architect, Fischer von Erlach, the so-called "Pinzgau Cathedral" forms the centre of the complete "Maria Kirchenthal Ensemble". Because of its unique architecture, Maria Kirchenthal was designated an historic monument in the year 2000.

Within barely a two-kilometre radius, the Salzburg Saalach Valley conceals three extraordinary natural monuments. At the foot of both the Loferer and Leoganger Steinberge ranges, and on the fringes of the Steinernes Meer, nature has created bizarre rock formations, thunderous waterfalls, along with one of the biggest cave systems in all of Europe, each one right next to the other:

The Saalach Valley Natural Wonders, including the Lower Kaser Gorge and Lamprecht’s Cave in St. Martin and Seisenberg Gorge in Weissbach.

Or why not head out to discover yet more wonders of the Saalach Valley on your own.

The nearby “City of Mozart”, Salzburg, is definitely not to be missed. And an excursion to neighbouring Tyrol is also highly worthwhile.
